Born in Anyang, Kyonggi-Do, Korean violist Heejin Chang enjoys sharing her love of classical music and the viola with audiences.
As a soloist, Heejin has performed in Seoul, Korea, with the Prime Philharmonic Orchestra, the Gu-Ri City Philharmonic Orchestra, and KNUA Symphony Orchestra. She has given solo recitals in Kumho Art Hall, Young-San Art Hall and KNUA Hall, the 24th Viola Space in Tokyo and numerous venues in the United States.
The winner of the major competition in Korea. Heejin was the gold prize winner at the SunWha music competition at age 11. Continuously, she got first Prize Winner at the Eum-Ak-Chun-Chu (Music Journal) Music Competition, a first prize winner in all ages of the viola part at the Sung-Jung music competition, a second prize winner at the 48th Dong-A music competition. On the international stage, she was selected as a prize winner at the Japan-Osaka international music competition, the 49th William C. Byrd young artist competition for strings, and the New York International Artists Competition.
In addition to solo performances, Heejin actively participated in the orchestra. She has served as a principal violist of the KNUA Symphony Orchestra, Yale Philharmonia, NEC Philharmonia, and MSM Philharmonia Orchestra. She also played in the viola section of the Boston Philharmonic Orchestra and Montclair Orchestra as a student fellow.
With enthusiasm for chamber music, Heejin was invited to the Tong-Young International Music Festival, the Seoul Spring Festival of Chamber Music in Korea, the Rittergut Benningsen Festival in Germany, and the Canton Asian Music Festival in China. For 60 years of partnership and shared prosperity concert between the Republic of Korea and the United States, she performed at Kennedy Center in Washington DC, Lincoln Center in New York, and Los Angeles. She appeared at Jordan Hall in Boston for the chamber music gala concert, at Weill Recital Hall, Carnegie Hall in New York, and in the masterclass of the Chamber Music Society of Lincoln Center.
Festival highlights include appearances at the NAC Young Artists Program (Director; Pinchas Zuckerman), Banff Master Class and Orchestra Program in Canada, Summit Music Festival, Bowdoin International Music Festival, Sarasota Music Festival in the United States and the International Musicians Seminar Prussia Cove in England. Especially, she is teaching chamber music at Manhattan in the Mountain Music Festival as an assistant faculty. WIOX Radio in the Catskill broadcasted the faculty concert on live.
Previously, Heejin attended Seoul Arts High School and is the recipient of a Bachelor’s degree from the Korean National University of Arts where she was an honor student of a young-talented artist and graduated in 3 years, studying with Soonhwa Oh. In the United States, she achieved her Master of Music degree at Yale University School of Music studying with Ettore Causa. After that, she studied with Dimitri Murrath at the New England Conservatory of Music for a Graduate Diploma and Music in Education Certification. In 2022, she purchased a Doctor of Musical Arts degree at the Manhattan School of Music studying with Samuel Rhodes. Currently, she is giving a lecture in the contemporary viola repertoire class at the Korean National University of Arts and Sookmyung Women's University.
비올리스트 장희진은 선화예술학교 졸업한 후 서울예술고등학교와 한국예술종합학교 예비학교 재학 중 한국예술종합학교에 영재 입학하였다. 이후 예술사 (학사) 과정을 3년만에 조기 졸업 후 도미, 예일대학교 음악 대학원에서 석사 졸업 (Irving S. Gilmore Scholarship전액 장학금), 뉴 잉글랜드 콘서바토리에서 전문 연주자 과정 (NEC Scholarship & Merit Award 전액 장학금)을 마치며 Music in Education Concentration 도 함께 취득하였다. Juilliard String Quartet 의 Samuel Rhodes 문하에서 수학하며, 2022년 5월 한국인 비올리스트로는 최초로 맨하튼 음대 박사학위를 취득하였다. (MSM Scholarship 전액 장학금, 논문: Allusion to J. S. Bach in György Ligeti’s Sonata for Solo Viola)
일찍이 국내에서 선화 콩쿨 금상, 음악 춘추 1위, 바로크 합주단 콩쿨 2위, 성정 콩쿨 비올라 부문 전체 최우수상, 제 48회 동아일보 콩쿨 2위를 시작으로 일본 오사카 국제콩쿨 입상, 미국 The 49th William C. Byrd young artist competition for strings 입상, The 10th Lancaster International Chamber Music Competition 2위, The New York International Artists Competition 1위 없는 2위 등 다수의 무 대에서 두각을 나타냈다.
솔리스트로서 프라임 필, 구리시 교향악단, 한국 원로교향악단, KNUA 심포니 오케 스트라와 협연하였으며 KNUA series 독주회, Ola viola 영 아티스트 콘서트, 금호 영 아티스트 독주회, 영산 신인 연주자 시리즈, 엘림 아트센터에서 독주회를 가졌다. 2021년 7월 일신홀에서 국내 최초로 조르지 리게티 비올라 소나타 전곡 연주를 하며 음악계의 주목을 받았다.펜데믹 기간에도 끊임없는 학구열을 바탕으로 서울문화재단에서 주최하는 1S1P(1 Stage for 1 Player)에 선정되어 연주하였다.
국내뿐 아니라 캐나다 NAC Young Artists Program, 미국 Summit, Bowdoin, Sarasota Music Festival, 영국 Prussia Cove International Seminar, 일본 Tokyo Viola Space 에 초청되어 연주하였다.
실내악 연주자로서 통영 국제 음악제, 독일 하노버 Rittergut Benningsen Festival, 중국 광저우 Canton Asian Music Festival, 미국 보스턴 Jordan Hall, 뉴욕 카네기홀, 외교통상부 주최 한미수교 60주년 기념음악회 (뉴욕 링컨센터, 워싱턴 D.C 케네디 센터, LA 포드 극장) 에서 연주하였다. Ciel Ensemble의 멤버로서 롯데 콘서트홀, 구로 클래식 페스타, 서초 금요 음악회, 더 하우스 콘서트 줄라이 페스티벌, 예술의전당 여름 음악 축제 무대에 섰으며, 최양업홀 정오음악회가 평화방송으로, 서초 실내악축제 연주가 서초방송에 중계되었다.
오케스트라의 일원으로서 KNUA Symphony Orchestra, Yale Philharmonia, NEC Philharmonia 비올라 수석, 서초교향악단 객원 수석, 서울 시립 교향악단과 Boston Philharmonic Orchestra 객원 단원, Montclair Orchestra Student Fellow, 올라 비올라 사운드 단원으로 연주하였다. 2013년부터 매해 여름 Manhattan in the Mountain Summer Music Festival 에서 실내악을 가르쳤으며, 교수 음악회가 WIOX 라디오 생중계 되었다.
오순화, 김성은, 최정아, Ettore Causa, Dimitri Murrath를 사사하고, Bruno Posquier, Massimo Paris, Matthias Buchholz, Kim Kashkashian, Roberto Diaz, Nobuko Imai, Steven Tenenbom, James Dunham, Robert Vernon, Thomas Riebl, Paul Silverthorne, Tokyo String Quartet, Borromeo String Quartet, Gábor Tackás-Nagy, Calidore String Quartet 등 세계적인 음악가들의 마스터 클래스에 참가하여 음악적 지식을 넓히고 기량을 쌓았다.
현재, 한국예술종합학교 현대음악의 이해 강의 및 전공 실기 강사, 숙명여대에 출강하며 후학을 양성중이다.
